MU recently presented its annual B. Braun Awards to two distinguished Thai researchers in Human Reproduction and Family Planning. The Award was founded in conjunction with the leading Thai company B. Braun (Thailand), Ltd., to honor outstanding achievements in medicine and public health in Thailand. Prof. Dr. Suporn Koetsawang (above left), currently an advisor at MU's Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, was honored for his long and active research career. One of his major achievements is comprehensive research into illegal abortions in Thailand, in its medical, socio-demographic and economic aspects. His nationwide study of the health hazards of illegal abortions has inspired numerous public health and social experts to work toward solving this problem. Other achievements include founding a pioneering family planning clinic at Siriraj Hospital, operating since 1960; actively working on the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission; and receiving the Award for Creative Work or Invention and the 1993 Award for Distinguished Researcher in Medical Sciences, and the Dushdi Mala Medal for Distinguished Scientist.

Prof. Nikorn Dusitsin (above right), advisor to the Institute of Health Research of Chulalongkorn University (CU), was also honored for his many accomplishments, including working on the Reproductive Health Program at CU, which aims to introduce efficient and effective family planning methods suitable for Thai people. The innovative Program aims to produce new methods with five specific attributes: scientific validity, efficiency, replicability/transferability, high cost-effectiveness, and acceptance by all levels - from policy makers to health care providers to clients. This includes research into new technologies for human sterilization and contraception. Prof. Nikorn has previously been honored with a host of awards over his long career, including being named Outstanding National Researcher and receiving a National Research Award from the Thai government.
