MU Organizes UPEACE Meeting
in China
As part of MU's continuing collaboration
with the United Nations-affiliated University for Peace (UPEACE),
MU assisted in organizing the 'Second Meeting of the Asia-Pacific
Network of Universities and Institutions for Collaboration on
Education, Training and Research for Conflict Prevention and
Peace Building', held in Beijing, China, on 22 - 23 May.
The event was co-hosted by Tsinghua University's Center for Environmental,
Resources and Energy Law in Beijing, and held in collaboration
with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs with funding
support from the UN Development Program. The Meeting's focus
was on three thematic areas in conflict prevention and education
for peace: environment, resources and sustainable development;
culture, ethnicity and religions; and post-conflict and disaster
operations. These themes emerged from the First Network Meeting
in Bangkok in December 2000, also co-organized by MU, where a
Collaborative Program for Education, Teaching, Research and Communication
in Conflict Prevention and Building a Culture of Peace was developed
by the Network members.
The Network members are comprised
of leading universities and institutions in the Asia-Pacific
region, represented by their distinguished academic and governmental
leaders with relevant expertise. Over 30 Members were represented
at the Second Network Meeting in Beijing, hailing from 19 different
Asia-Pacific countries.
